Blending the real world with the metaverse
Welcome to this week's issue of The Baking Sheet -- This week is highlighted by Sporting Goods and Retail leader, Decathlon, announcing the launch of its first NFT Project on Tezos!
Before we dive in, reminder for Bakers that Jakarta 2 was injected that has the same feature set as the original Jakarta proposal + critical fixes to ensure the next upgrade is implemented as smooth as possible. Let's make sure we keep those ovens hot and vote for the proposal, the key strength of Tezos is on-chain governance that evolves the protocol over time.
Ecosystem Insights: Decathlon x Tezos
Tezos accompanies Decathlon for the launch of its project Kipsta Barrio: a new range of sneakers inspired and designed for Street Football players.
In its first-ever NFT, Decathlon collaborated with Séan Garnier, world champion and three-time French freestyle soccer champion, to design sneakers which pay tribute to his career. The sneakers will be available in 2,008 editions– paying homage to the year he won the world championship in Brazil. This project marks the first step in building a future in which digital and physical goods are connected. Indeed, each shoe will be associated with an NFT in the form of a "golden ticket" and will give access to personalized and exclusive experiences with the world champion. A golden ticket that extends the experience!
Decathlon chose to build its project on the Tezos blockchain in accordance with the company’s biodiversity and climate ambition commitments. The choice of Tezos was motivated by its energy-efficient Proof-of-Stake design and low costs to mint and transact digital art. The total annual carbon footprint of the Tezos blockchain is equivalent to the average energy footprint of 17 people. Some of the most recognizable sports organizations choose Tezos to build their fan engagement, including Manchester United and Formula 1 racing teams Red Bull Racing and McLaren Racing.
"For Decathlon, the Kipsta Barrio project is the first step in the world of Blockchain and NFT. We therefore wanted to surround ourselves with partners who are references in their universe - Séan Garnier for freestyle soccer and Nomadic Labs and Tezos, in blockchain. We hope that this collaboration with Séan Garnier will call for many others and we can't wait for the public to adopt this new pair," explains Valentin Auvinet, NFT leader at Decathlon.
"Decathlon is one of the favorite companies of the French and has been recognized for years for its innovation. We are therefore happy to see they are deploying their first NFT on Tezos, which hopefully will lead to others. And who better than a freestyle soccer world champion to symbolize this project?" concludes Hadrien Zerah, Managing Director at Nomadic Labs.
The shoes will be available on the Decathlon website in selected countries
